Heart N' Soul Leonbergers

Social site for our past and future Leonberger puppy parents.

So guess who's staying at my house temporarily (maybe)?

That is Casey, a 2 and a half year old Leo that was up on Craig's List (excuse the background, it's my basement where the computer is). The poor girl was bought from a pet store *boo hiss* at 4 months old. By the time she was 1 she had been surrendered to a shelter (no clue on exact reason), got a home that from the records seems okay (got her shots and all that) but ended up underweight and covered in fleas. She got another home that got rid of the fleas but was giving her away intact and saying she could be bred. I know so much because her paper work has managed to follow her, even the receipt from the pet store.

So I took her in last Friday, brought her right to work with me and got her all checked out. Besides having whipworms she was in good shape and will now be spayed on Thursday.

Technically we are looking for a home, but.... she's an absolute angel! Totally housebroken, awesome with Sally, sweet as can be. We'll see what happens, lol.

Oh and she seems pretty tiny for a Leo, she's about 80lbs and in pretty good shape. With some muscle maybe she could add a little bit, but not much. She is definitely not breeding quality and she already started life in those circumstances, not gonna let her get sent back (oddly enough she's from IL as well!).

Funny side note... 3 different people stopped me on the street today when I was walking Casey asking if she was Sally, lol! Sally's growing fast, but not that fast!

What a great ending to a story that could have had many bad endings! Thank you for rescuing a leo and giving her a home she deserves

Casey found a home on Saturday...

With my Mother-in-law! I couldn't be more thrilled. My mil lost her 13 year old golden a couple of months back and just wasn't sure if she was ready for another dog yet when Casey first came to stay with us. Then Friday my mil calls me up at work (not normal, lol) and asks if Casey is still available :). For her she absolutely was! Apparently it was just way to quiet in the house and she had fallen for Casey when they met earlier.

I'm doing a happy dance. Casey is in a home where she will be spoiled rotten and absolutely constantly loved on PLUS we still get to visit her all the time. It is the absolute perfect situation and I've been getting daily calls about how perfect she is and how great she is fitting in already. A whole lot of happy dancing going on over here!

We are looking for a home for her but I don't see her being much good as a service dog. She has a TON of energy and is very outgoing. Most service dogs I know have to be able to walk past people and other dogs without saying hello and I'm not sure this girl has it in her. She loves every person and dog she meets and she wants to make sure that they know that too, lol.

I did contact the Leo rescues but haven't heard back. It's not a big deal though, she was spayed on Thursday so I don't want her to go anywhere until she's healed from that anyway. Plus, she's such an easy keeper that I'm having fun having her around. I'm sorta hoping that she grows enough on hubby he'll agree to have her stay, hehe.

I have three different sets of people interested in her though and any of them would make a great forever home. It's all kinda up in the air until she's healed from the spay and then we'll see what happens.

What a pretty girl. Thank you so much for rescueing her! If you decide not to keep her, you can contact Leo Rescue or Leos in need. I do know one gal in southern Illinois who is looking for a Leo to train as a service dog if you think she might fit that description?
Big hugs to you Sally and big sister Casey!
